With a standing ovation, Tramell Tillman became the first Black actor to win an Emmy for supporting actor in a drama series.

Tillman was awarded for his powerful role in Apple TV+’s hit drama series “Severance.” In it, he plays Seth Milchick, a supervisor at Lumon Industries that leads the microdata-refinement team.

Despite being largely overlooked during the show’s first season in 2022, Tillman was able to come out on top at this year’s Emmy awards, beating out two of his costars, Zach Cherry and John Turturro, for the category.

During his acceptance speech, he highlighted his mother’s support for him through the years.

“Mama, you were there for me when no one else was, and no one else would show up,” he said. “This is for you.”

Later in the winner’s room, Tillman went on to emphasize the work of other Black trailblazers that came before him.

“I’m still processing, but I am fortunate to be in the company of such great actors that have gone before me, like Andre Braugher, Ossie Davis, Michael K. Williams… Giancarlo Esposito and Jeffrey Wright. These men, I’ve been taken by their work for years, and I borrow from them, so I’m just honored to be in the class.”

With the 55-year gap between the category’s establishment and a Black actor finally being awarded for it, this moment will surely go down in history as one of the best Emmys moments.
